Improv: Acting at it’s…

How do you describe something that changes in every second of its existence? The answer is that you let it speak for itself.

“Improv” is the shortened version of “Improvised Acting.” Like the name suggests, improv is just acting in the moment rather than the traditional scripted scenes we are familiar with from movies, television shows, plays, and musicals. Although improvisation acting is a skill that is used in all these examples, it is not the foundation of the performance. A great example of this skill being used is Robert Downey Jr. and his habit of hiding snacks on set, and incorporating them into his performance and the scene.

The Improv Club at the Murray GSP campus is not as serious as a multi-million production, or a famous Broadway musical, but it’s an interesting and important club to the scholars who watch and participate. It helps to build the confidence of scholars while expanding their creativity and minds with funny and fast pace exercises and activities.

This club is run by the youngest faculty member to join us this year, Zach Standley. He himself is a 2019 GSP alumni, and was an RA last year when he began the Improv Club.

Improv meets almost every Thursday afternoon in the Elizabeth Amphitheater at four and it officially ends at five, right before dinner. But the fun doesn’t end there, as scholars tend to stay up to an hour after continuing with scenes and creating a universe with imaginary objects and surprising complex characters.

Every element of improv flows into the next scene or action, creating an always interesting experience that is wholly unique every time it is performed. You do not have to be an actor to participate. Just show up to watch or participate, we would love to see you there!
