This year, journalism isn’t the only class taking on a big project; the music theory and performance focus area also has a big gift in store for the rest of the scholars. Their gift is a musical performed at the final group showcase. I was lucky enough to sit in on the class this past week and learn a whole lot about what is to come.
Tana Fields is the music theory and performance teacher at GSP. Her goal for the class is to give them an introduction to the music world by giving them a chance to create their own performance. This performance could be anything as long as it contains multiple styles and genres. This year the class, independent of Tana, chose to create a lively and exciting musical.
The class began with an analysis of one of the scholar’s favorite songs. This time it was “Fortunate Son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Tana would later tell me that each of the students got to choose one song until they all had analyzed their song as a group. They spent about 20 minutes analyzing and discussing the way the music made them feel and the way it impacted them.
Then they moved onto their final project; the students began planning out their showcase act. They started by creating a storyboard on the whiteboard and opening discussion to the class. Class discussion was very productive and helpful and the class was able to work together to come to create a unique show that shows great promise. The class began practicing their production and excitement is sure to come to the rest of the campus.
