On Thursday, John Clayton’s General Studies class took a field trip to the Kentucky Center for School Safety building here on Murray’s campus. While there, they got to serve the local community and Kentucky as a whole by putting together emergency preparedness bags.

These bags – containing basic items like first aid kits, flashlights, water bottles, and information packets – are prepared each year and sent to schools across the state. The idea behind them is that in an emergency situation, teachers would be able to take these bags with them to help care for their students.
After a few hours of hard work and focus, the scholars were able to complete 500 of these bags. These bags will be sent to schools upon request.
The program was originally created in 1998, and is a state government funded organization. Apart from providing emergency items, the Kentucky Center for School Safety also provides educational resources and information that can be used in a class setting. Some of these include activities for school safety weeks, safety pledges for schools to take, statistics about safety within the Kentucky school system, and much more.
By helping to educate and encourage schools to put more of a focus on school safety, we can all help to make Kentucky a safer place for students. Scholars are encouraged to reach out to their schools to see if they are using the free resources provided by the Kentucky Center for School Safety.
