On July 24th, just a few days before move out time, a few of Bella Ezumah’s journalism and mass media class had the honor of attending the Music Theory and Performance focus area’s musical called the “GSParody”. This group of hardworking scholars pulled together a great show for the rest of the community to watch.
As scholars settled into their seats, excitement filled the room. Scholars were chatting. RA’s were laughing, and all was good. Once the performance began the audience was amazed at how they chose to perform. Using all 15 people, they created a show using almost all original works, displaying each and every one of their musical talents. Some sang, some played an instrument, but everyone contributed.
The show focused around a couple, otherwise known as the “gsbaes.” The audience followed them through their five weeks at the Governor’s Scholars Program, they watched through heartbreak, major miscommunication, laughter, and joy. All of these emotions were punctuated through their excellent selection of music. Their hard work was displayed through their original songs talking about grass, love, and heartbreak.
At the end of the musical, Tana’s music theory and performance class sang “Closing Time” to indicate that the play was now over, a recurring thing that has happened during all of our events here. During this, you could see the audience waving their hands along with the beat. A few audience members got emotional realizing that our time here at the Governor’s Scholar Program was really coming to a close.
The music theory class put on a great performance and the memories of producing and watching will be carried on by the scholars for many years to come!
